Our Services
Supportive Editorial Services offers a full range of options for professional, amateur, or business people. A number of these services can be combined into a single project at a negotiated rate.
-
Developmental editing is reserved for manuscripts of either fiction or non-fiction (I will look at partials that are more than 50% complete). This type of work involves looking at the piece as a whole- its structure, plot, inconsistencies, pacing, tone, etc. A letter, and usually a Zoom call, to discuss the work are a part of this service.
-
Line edits look more closely at the sentence and paragraph levels of structure, their overall tone, style, and language, to make certain they work for the piece as a whole. For example: if in a mystery/thriller, the uneducated street tough is talking in complex, college sounding sentences, then the character becomes unbelievable.
-
This form of editing examines spelling, grammar, syntax, and punctuation across the entirety of a manuscript. Have these things interfered with the piece’s readability?
-
This is a surface read for catching typos, misspellings, citation mistakes, and such immediately prior to publication/submission.
-
Here is where multiple services intersect. This involves helping with conceptual strategies, plotting & planning (scheming is at the writers’ discretion), and various levels of editing components.
Supportive Editorial Services provides:
A fresh perspective.
Someone who hasn’t read through the same text 500 times, so the missing words and broken grammar get seen.
Extensive knowledge.
Having been a teacher and trained as an editor over many years, I have the know-how to get the job done.
Easy going manner.
Reaching out to an editor can be scary and/or daunting. I always strive to make this as painless and edifying as possible. It’s important for the client to understand where things broke… unless the preference is for me to just go in and fix stuff. I’m happy to accommodate either need.
Meet Kelly, Your Editor
I’ve taught elementary school through college classes of English/Grammar for more than 20 years and been working as a freelance editor for just over 5 years. Having experienced the wrong end of rough teachers and editors a few times in my life, I work hard to be supportive, efficient, and gently communicative.
When someone is brought in to “fix things,” it can be hard, even emotional (for authors). That’s because a relative stranger is analyzing your communication skills. My intent is to help you convey your thoughts in your own words as clearly as possible, and hopefully, you may learn a couple of tidbits along the way.
