What types of editing do I offer?
As an editor, I edit fiction manuscripts, business pieces (reports, letters, etc.), undergraduate and graduate papers, and professional academic journal articles.
Different documents often require varied methods of analysis, and in some cases, different tools at my disposal. For example, an academic paper on theoretical mathematics requires a set of skills, knowledge, and reference guides than an Urban Fantasy manuscript. As such, these projects may differ in cost based on what’s needed.
Supportive Editorial Services
These offerings provide a variety of options depending on the needs of the client. Note:
Fiction writers: the packages below are designed to address an author’s needs as they stand. Please feel free to reach out if there are any other questions not covered.
Academic clients: these packages would also include reference checks and formatting coverage for footnotes and endnotes in accordance with whichever style guide is needed.
Standard Supportive Editing Package
-
This package includes copy and line editing. When the project is roughly half done, there will be an email sent outlining work details and anything of note. Another email will be sent upon completion explaining the remaining work. Additionally, a meeting can be scheduled for either the start or end of the project to discuss questions and/or concerns.
-
Copy editing, line editing, mid-point email, end-point email, and a 30 minute meeting
Nurturing Supportive Editing Package
-
This package involves the same supports as the Standard Package, but it also includes extra communication. It’s for newer authors/writers who prefer to hear back more often. There is a meeting at the beginning and at the end of the process.
-
Copy editing, line editing, mid-point email, end-point email, and two 30 minute meetings
Mentoring Supportive Editing Package
-
As the title states, this is a full, mentoring package in which there is an initial meeting for discussion of structure and direction, two meetings while in progress to cover any questions or issues, and a closing meeting to make sure all aspects have been covered.
-
Developmental editing, line editing, copy editing, mid-point email, end-point email, and four 30 minute meetings
À La Carte Services
Developmental Editing
-
This is both an examination of the story structure and a conversation about its direction, arcs, plot, etc. Fiction writers should have at least 75% of the manuscript, novella, etc. completed so that a full analysis of plot structures, character arcs, and so on can be done. Dev editing is deep dive on the big picture of a story.
For an academic paper, this would involve looking at the question, or thesis, and then analyzing the writer’s arguments to make certain they are laid out logically with an appropriate sequence.
-
A full read of the work is conducted. Notes are made of positives, negatives, and questions regarding any ambiguities. Once the read-through has happened, an email providing a thumbnail sketch of the results is sent, and a 45 minute meeting is set up with the author to discuss findings.
Line Editing
-
Line edits looks more closely at the sentence and paragraph levels of structure, their overall tone, style, and language, to make certain they work for the piece as a whole. For example, for fiction, the editor makes sure that the vocabulary fits the character. In an academic piece, there is an assessment to make certain adherence to the institution’s style guide has been followed.
-
This service includes an explanatory summary of the document’s successes and challenges with appropriate recommendations. This is provided via email at the conclusion of the project.
Copy Editing
-
This involves an examination of spelling, grammar, syntax, and punctuation across the entirety of a piece of work.
-
It includes an explanatory summary of work email at the conclusion of the project. Explanations can be requested for the underlying grammatical rules as part of the markup process.
Proofreading
-
This service covers a readthrough of a manuscript or academic paper for any mistakes in content or formatting.
-
This includes an examination of the full document (including references) in its entirety. The piece is then returned with an email regarding any findings. No AI is used in this or any other processes.
Writing Coaching
for Fiction Writers
-
For fiction writers, this service covers discussions on areas in which the writer feels as though they need more clarification on particular topics, such as plot structure, three dimensional characters, setting, descriptions, world building, and so on.
-
After an initial 30 minute consultation to ascertain what areas the writer wishes to cover, the content discussions are handled in one hour chunks for as many as the client wishes to have.
